My impression is with the re-adjusted bias this did a lot to eliminate the blown finals for the 7700 but that is just my guess.I would suggest joining the Yahoo IC7700 user group. In the files area there is a file: ICOM7700ESDPA.pdf that lists the serial numbers of 7700's owned by group members who have cooked the Encoder or blown finals.

The group also has a lot of helpful information and would be a good place to ask questions before you make a purchase. My understanding is no group member has ever reported a failure with the '12' prefix.
