If you’re using Normal view and objects on your slide get selected, instead of all the slides in the left pane, click a slide in the left pane before you choose Edit→Select All (or before you press Command+A).

3. With some or all of your slides selected, click the Transitions tab in the Elements Gallery.

4. Click a thumbnail, and the theme is applied to all slides that are selected.

   When you click a thumbnail, you see a thumbnail-sized preview of the transition on the first selected slide. Slides that have transitions applied to them display a little icon below their bottom-left corner.

   Click anywhere to advance from one slide to the next.

(I am also use version 16.16.5)It seems that there is something changing in the location of the files since you have mentioned that the issue just happens with some of the pictures and PDF files links in the presentation.Is it possible that you accidentally moved the file?Could you please re-link some pictures and PDF files on your desktop as test and check if the link will be invalid some days later?You can also try to move some pictures and PDF files to a folder and move the folder to another location instead of desktop to see if the link will be invalid.Best Regards,Gloria.
